Welcome to BDAP
Blockchain systems creator Duality is launching BDAP, a revolutionary product that replaces the industry standard LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol). BDAP, which stands for Blockchain Directory Access Protocol, dispenses with the need for businesses and organizations to employ a trusted third party to host their databases. As well as generating cost-savings, BDAP offers organizations maximum control over their data directories, while allowing any personnel with the required clearance to access, search and update the directories, wherever they are.
The applications for BDAP are broad, with compelling potential for schools, universities, hospitals and other organizations that rely on large databases.
What is BDAP?
BDAP is the protocol behind Duality’s Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) system, giving organizations programmable access control. It allows direct communication with other parties signed up on the BDAP network.
How does BDAP work?
BDAP adds a layer of resource hierarchy compared with LDAP. It provides a distributed database and account linking to our blockchains, which makes it possible to develop core information systems from a hybrid public-private blockchain. The hybrid design allows both anonymous and identified (permissionless and permissioned) nodes to connect and share data privately and securely without a third-party intermediary and to scale the database up indefinitely.
How secure is BDAP?
BDAP provides tamper-resistant participant identities, and the ability to audit and certify entries or records on the Dynamic and Sequence blockchains. Anonymous and identified participants can use both private and public services, such as pShare, pSign, video streaming for professional consultations and even advice forums to interact with experts. BDAP users are able to look up other participants in our directory chains to create private connections.
How can BDAP be used?
There is a huge range of potential applications for BDAP across all sectors, most particularly for organizations that generate and rely on live, searchable, updatable data directories. Here we look at how BDAP could perform in the healthcare, education and retail sectors.
Healthcare
Using Duality’s BDAP, Hospital X registers its domain name on the blockchain as a healthcare service provider (BDAP entry). By using a BDAP side chain, (a side chain is private and off the main, decentralized chain), the hospital can create its own private electronic patient records system. The hospital makes this system searchable by hosting its own Dynode Distributed Hash Table (DHT) network. The data is stored in line with the FHIR healthcare data standard, with the side chain ensuring data privacy. BDAP allows other security-cleared providers to search the directory and interact with each other privately. When a user views an individual patient’s record, an audit hash is created that identifies who accessed it, when and why. If the user updates the patient’s record, another unique hash is created recording who updated the record, when and why. This guarantees an accurate health record workflow.
Education
University X opens a BDAP account, registers its domain and creates a side-chain to run its core information systems. It sets up verified BDAP accounts for administrators (Dean, Admissions Committee, Department Heads, etc). Users can then vote on school bylaws, curriculum, and classes for the opening semester, streamlining the governance process and creating maximum transparency. Lecture videos and audio files can be stored on side-chains, as can curriculum content, grades, qualifications, and communications. Grades are stored on the blockchain using timestamps to create tamper-proof audits.
Retail
Supplier X opens a BDAP account and creates a side-chain with a private Dynode Distributed Hash Table (DHT) network for secure data storage. By means of the distributed database (DHT), each product manufacturing lot and product unit is given a unique identifier, which in turn is stored as a BDAP object on the private chain. The identifier is coupled and tagged with the product with a label, inscribed on the unit. The product is then added to the supply chain. In addition to the lot and unit IDs, images and the weight of each product can be stored on the side-chain. This creates details of each product’s exact provenance, including when it was made and who made it. Pictures of the original product allow the user to detect tampering, damage, and counterfeits before they proceed up the supply chain.
Why should I use BDAP?
BDAP has several significant cost-saving benefits. First, it drastically reduces the total ownership cost of core information systems by disposing of the need for webmasters, database administrators, postmasters, network administrators, infrastructure security administrators and all other trusted third parties. BDAP also does away with expensive sublicensing (such as Oracle DB) usually required by core information systems. Finally, BDAP reduces the need for a VPN, data security and encryption tools on central servers and backup servers. As well as cost savings there are security benefits to using BDAP, which protects data immutability through the use of blockchains, and stores mutable data in Duality’s own DHT.
What’s next for BDAP?
The second version of BDAP will include security adaptors for MongoDB, Redis and/or PostgreSQL, offering the high-speed data access needed by some side-chains systems. This solution renders the current centralized database systems — which are highly prone to hacks and malicious attacks — obsolete.
